How to build a tallow
skincare routine:
morning & evening
The best skincare routine is one simple enough to actually do every day. Tallow balm fits into that principle naturally — it's a one-product solution for most of your skin's needs, which means your routine gets shorter, not longer, when you switch to it.
This guide covers how to build a morning and evening tallow skincare routine, how to layer it with other products you might already be using, and how to adjust based on your skin type and specific concerns. If you're not yet familiar with what tallow balm is and how it works, start with our complete guide first.
The core principle: seal, don't strip
Most conventional routines are built around the idea of stripping excess oil, then putting moisture back in. Tallow routines work on the opposite principle: protect and replenish the skin's barrier rather than cycling it through damage and repair.
In practice, this means a gentler cleanser, fewer harsh actives used less frequently, and tallow as the final step that locks everything in. The skin tends to become less reactive, less oily, and more consistent over time — because you're working with its biology instead of against it.
The morning routine
- Cleanse (optional). If your skin feels balanced, a simple rinse with water is enough in the morning. Cleansing twice a day is often more than most skin actually needs — especially once tallow has helped stabilize your barrier.
- Tone or serum (if using). Apply any water-based serums or toners — hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide — and let them absorb fully before the next step. Actives go on before tallow, not after.
- Tallow balm. Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips until it softens to a light oil. Press — don't rub — into slightly damp skin. Our Basic Bee works well here for everyday use; Bee Flawless for mature or aging skin. If you're heading outdoors, Worker Bee is specifically formulated for UV-stressed skin — its tamanu oil builds a secondary UV barrier through UV activation.
- Sun protection. For conventional SPF, apply over tallow after it has had a minute to absorb. Alternatively, our Solar Bee is a natural mineral sunscreen built on a tallow base — non-nano zinc oxide for UVA/UVB protection, tamanu oil for additional UV-activated barrier support, and cocoa powder for a natural tint. It replaces both this step and the tallow step in one application, making it the cleanest morning option for sun-exposed days.
The evening routine
- Cleanse. Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove SPF, makeup, and the day's buildup. Avoid anything that leaves your skin feeling tight — that tight feeling means you've stripped the barrier you're trying to build.
- Active treatments (if using). Retinoids, exfoliating acids, or prescription treatments go here. Let them absorb fully — 15–20 minutes for stronger actives — before moving to the next step.
- Serum or facial oil (optional). If you're using a targeted treatment like our Nectar Face Serum, apply it here. It layers well under tallow and provides an additional layer of repair.
- Tallow balm. The last step. Apply a slightly more generous amount than morning and let it work overnight. Your skin's cellular repair cycle is most active during sleep — tallow as a final seal gives that process the best conditions to work in.

Layering tallow with other products
Tallow works well alongside most skincare products — the key is order of application. As a general rule: lightest to heaviest, water-based before oil-based, actives before occlusives.
With retinol or retinoids: Apply your retinoid, wait 15–20 minutes, then apply tallow as the final step. Tallow can actually offset some of retinol's dryness and irritation — the barrier support it provides helps skin tolerate stronger actives better over time.
With vitamin C: Apply vitamin C first on clean skin, let it absorb, then layer tallow over. Vitamin C is water-soluble and should go on before any oils.
With exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs): Give acids extra time before tallow — at least 15 minutes — so they can complete their action before being sealed in.
With hyaluronic acid: This is a particularly good pairing. Hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin; tallow seals it there. Apply HA to damp skin, let it absorb, then press tallow over the top.
Under makeup: A thin layer of tallow works well as a moisturizing base under foundation. Too much will cause pilling — use less than you think you need and give it a full minute to absorb before applying makeup.
On sun protection: Most tallow balms have no UV protection on their own — but two of ours are formulated differently. Solar Bee is a mineral sunscreen built on a tallow base with non-nano zinc oxide and tamanu oil, replacing both your moisturizer and SPF in one step. Worker Bee contains tamanu oil — a UV-activated plant ingredient that builds a secondary sun barrier over time and repairs existing UV damage. Neither is a substitute for conventional SPF in high-exposure situations, but both bring meaningful sun protection support that most tallow products don't.
Building a routine for specific concerns
For acne-prone skin
Introduce tallow only at night to start. Use a very small amount — smaller than a pea — on skin that's been gently cleansed and fully dried. Give it three to four weeks before evaluating. For the full breakdown, see Tallow Balm for Acne.
For eczema or sensitive skin
Keep it as simple as possible. Gentle cleanse, fragrance-free tallow (our Bee Bare), nothing else until your skin settles. Add additional products one at a time if needed. For a deeper guide, see Tallow Balm for Eczema.
For anti-aging
The most effective anti-aging tallow routine pairs a retinoid with tallow as the final sealing step. Bee Flawless under Nectar Face Serum, applied nightly, is our most popular pairing for mature skin.
For men or post-shave skin
Apply immediately after shaving to damp skin. Worker Bee is formulated specifically for weathered, sun-exposed skin. For the full men's routine breakdown, see Tallow Balm for Men.
