What each one actually is

Tallow balm

Tallow is rendered animal fat — in skincare, typically from beef or bison. When rendered slowly at low temperatures, it produces a clean, stable fat rich in oleic, palmitic, stearic, and linoleic acids, plus naturally occurring fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. The sourcing matters: grass-finished tallow carries significantly more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio than grain-finished tallow.

What makes tallow unusual is its structural similarity to human sebum. Your skin produces an oily substance with a nearly identical fatty acid composition — which is why tallow integrates into the skin barrier rather than sitting on the surface.

Shea butter

Shea butter is extracted from the seed of the shea tree, native to West Africa. It's predominantly oleic acid (45–50%) and stearic acid (35–45%), with some linoleic and palmitic acid. It also contains vitamin E and small amounts of triterpenes — plant compounds with mild anti-inflammatory activity.

Shea is a well-established moisturizer with a long track record. Its fatty acid profile is genuinely nourishing, though its plant-based composition means it's less similar to skin's own lipids than tallow. It melts at skin temperature, absorbs reasonably well, and works across most skin types without significant comedogenic risk.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is predominantly lauric acid (around 50%) — a medium-chain saturated fat with well-documented antibacterial and antifungal properties. This is where coconut oil genuinely excels: as an antimicrobial ingredient, it's useful for scalp conditions, fungal issues, and body applications where bacterial or fungal overgrowth is a factor.

The limitation on facial skin is comedogenicity. Shea wins: vegan skin and body moisture

If you follow a vegan or plant-based lifestyle, shea butter is the most capable plant-based alternative to tallow for facial and body moisturizing. Its oleic and stearic acid content genuinely nourishes, its comedogenicity is low, and it's one of the more effective plant-based barrier emollients available.

It also performs well on the body — for pregnancy belly, stretch marks, and general body hydration, shea has a long track record. It's less effective on thin facial skin than tallow, but for body use the gap narrows considerably.

Coconut oil wins: scalp, hair, and antibacterial use

Lauric acid's antibacterial and antifungal properties make coconut oil genuinely useful for scalp conditions like dandruff (often fungal in origin), oil pulling, body massage, and hair conditioning.
